Middle School Students

So Much Is Changing. Give Them a Place to Breathe, Laugh & Belong.

Middle school can feel like everything is changing at once — their bodies, brains, friendships, emotions and the way they see themselves. Our sessions are led live online, so schools and students can join from anywhere in the world.

Bring Laughter Yoga to Your Students
They are not little children anymore — but they are not adults yet. Sometimes what they need most is a place where they can stop performing and simply be.

Why This Age Matters

Middle School Is a Huge Transition — Inside and Out.

Early adolescence is a period of major physical, neurological, emotional and social development. Students are building new capacities while navigating a world that suddenly feels more complicated.

Their bodies are changing

Puberty can bring rapid physical changes and increased awareness of how they look and how others see them.

Their brains are developing

Systems involved in planning, emotions, decision-making and social experiences are still being fine-tuned.

Peers matter more

Belonging, friendships, acceptance and fear of judgment can take on enormous importance.

Emotions can feel bigger

Students are learning to understand and manage increasingly complex emotions.

School pressure grows

Tests, grades, expectations and increasing independence can add another layer of stress.

What Laughter Yoga Can Offer

A Place to Release. Reconnect. Reset.

Middle schoolers do not always want to sit down and explain how they feel. Laughter Yoga gives them a body-based, social and playful way to shift state without requiring them to disclose anything personal.

Release School Stress

Research in eighth-grade students has reported reductions in educational stress and test anxiety after regular Laughter Yoga sessions.

Feel Less Alone

Shared laughter creates moments of belonging without needing to find the perfect words.

Loosen Self-Consciousness

Structured group play creates a safe way to experiment with being less guarded.

Reconnect With the Body

Breathing, movement and rhythm bring attention back into the body without competition or appearance being the focus.

Build Hope & Lightness

A randomized trial with eighth-grade students reported increased hope and lower school burnout.

Practice Shifting State

Students experience that how they feel in one moment does not have to be how they feel forever.

Move Without Competition

They can move and express without scoring, comparison or athletic expectations.

Connect Beyond Cliques

Group laughter can create a shared experience across friendship groups and social roles.

Keep Some Playfulness

They get permission to keep access to imagination, silliness and joy without being treated like little kids.

Inside a Middle School Session

We Don’t Start With “Now Everybody Laugh.”

Self-consciousness is normal at this age. A good session builds gradually so students can enter without feeling exposed.

  1. Arrive & Decompress

Breathing and simple movement help students transition.

  2. Warm Up Together

Rhythm, clapping and group responses create momentum.

  3. Laugh Without Needing a Reason

Guided exercises make laughter something the group does together.

  4. Move & Connect

Music, gestures and playful interaction create shared participation.

  5. Come Back Down

Breathing and relaxation bring the room toward calm.

Students participating together

Two Ways to Participate

At School Together — or Live From Home.

The facilitator is live online in both formats, so we can lead classes for schools, programs and students anywhere in the world.

Students at school

Option 1 · At School

One Group. One Room. Connected Live From Anywhere.

Students gather at school or in an after-school space while our facilitator joins live through the screen.

A teacher or staff member remains physically present for supervision, safety and student support. Dance & Laugh Wellness can compensate the designated staff member for supporting the session.

Why it works: students share the experience with people they see every day, helping the laughter become part of the group’s social connection.
Student joining from home

Option 2 · From Home

Each Student Joins Live From Their Own Computer.

Students connect from home and participate together through the screen, allowing schools and programs to reach young people across cities, countries and time zones.

The organizing institution handles its normal parent or guardian consent, attendance and online-participation procedures.

Why it can help: some middle schoolers feel less exposed when joining from a familiar personal space while still connecting with the group.

Research

Developmental Science + Emerging Laughter Yoga Research

We present Laughter Yoga as a supportive wellbeing practice during a developmental period when stress, belonging, emotional skills and social experience matter enormously.

Questions Adults Ask

“Middle Schoolers Will Think This Is Weird.”

Some probably will — for the first few minutes. The session is designed with that reality in mind.

What if they are embarrassed to laugh?

We never demand a big laugh or ask one student to perform. Watching, smiling, breathing, clapping or participating quietly all count.

Won’t this feel childish?

Not if it is facilitated for their age. We avoid preschool-style language and treat students with respect.

Can it help with school stress?

It is not a replacement for counseling or professional support, but randomized studies in eighth-grade students have reported promising outcomes for stress, test anxiety, burnout and hope.

What if a student is having a bad day?

They do not need to arrive happy. The class is not about forcing positivity; it offers a structured opportunity to breathe, move and experience a different state for a while.

Growing Up Is Already a Lot

Give Them One Place Where They Don’t Have to Get Everything Right.

A place to breathe. To move. To laugh without needing a reason. To feel part of something. And to remember that even during a difficult stage of growing up, there is still room for joy.
